Production and exchange

from Prehistory to the Early Middle Ages

May 12-13, 2023

The economic and exchange activity of the pre- and protohistoric periods, Antiquity, and the early Middle Ages are vast fields of research that have involved, over time, various methodologies and interpretive perspectives in the fields of archaeology, history, economic history, numismatics, law, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, the history of religions, and the history of art. Regional or global approaches have privileged either the materiality of production and exchange or the representations of these defining human activities. The interpretive models that historians and anthropologists have conceived in more than two centuries of research took into consideration the production for the maintenance of life and that carried out for obtaining profits in organized markets, the relationship between production and consumption domains, as well as the constructed socio-cultural aspects of these activities. All of these constitute main directions of intellectual reflection, whose exploration continues to have the attribute of actuality.

The proposed topics include the following axes of discussion, but is not limited to them:

– Farming and adaptability to the environment

– Materials, tools, techniques and production technologies

– Inventions and discoveries

– Exchange and communication routes – means, goods, ideas, and symbols

– Producers, traders, consumers

– Division and organization of work, decisions and political constructions of production and exchange

– Presence of these activities mirrored in various categories of written and visual historical sources

– Research methodologies and approaches concerning the production and exchange

– Museum valorisation of historical sources regarding production and exchange in the eras proposed for the debates.

The proposals could be submitted at the address florica.mihut@istorie.unibuc.ro until April 22, 2023, and will be accompanied by the following details: the title of the communication, the name and surname of the author, the institution represented, an abstract of no more than 300 words outlining the main working hypotheses, sources, and methodology used.

Scientific committee: dr. Daniela Zaharia, dr. Ecaterina Lung, dr. Carol Căpiță, dr. Mihai Constantinescu.

Announcement of accepted proposals and confirmation of participation, April 23-27, 2023.

Accepted languages for presentations: Romanian, French or English

Publication – written contributions will be submitted until October 1, 2023, and those selected through the blind-peer review system will be published in the 9th issue of the CICSA Journal online, new series, ISSN 2457-3809 (indexed in CEEOL).
